Earthquake Coverage

Does my homeowner’s insurance cover me for earthquakes?

A standard homeowner’s insurance policy in Indiana does NOT include coverage for earthquakes.  Most companies offer earthquake coverage as an endorsement to the policy, but you have to let your agent know that you want coverage in case of an earthquake.

Do I need earthquake Insurance?

According to the United States Geological Society, there is a 7 to 10 percent chance that a repeat of the 1811-1812 sized earthquakes will occur within the next 50 years; And a 25 to 40 percent chance of a still-dangerous magnitude 6.0 quake could strike during that time.

The simple and honest answer is that an earthquake will happen to us again here in Indiana, but nobody knows how big it will be.

How much does earthquake insurance cost?

Earthquake coverage on a typical homeowners insurance policy only cost about $60 to $80 per year.  It should be stated here that earthquake coverage normally carries a separate deductible of 5 to 10 percent of the dwelling coverage.

What should I do to make sure I’m covered?
